A Brief History of Rupert Elementary School

In 1888, Professor W.W. Rupert became the first Pottstown Borough Superintendent of School after having served as its High School principal. He served as Superintendent until his retirement in 1922. During his thirty-four years in this position, Professor Rupert was highly respected for his work in education. He organized the Pottstown schools and worked to introduce the latest methods and ideas.

In 1927, work was begun on a red brick school building in the east end of the borough. At the time, it was said to be a fine piece of architecture. It opened to students in 1928 bearing the name of former Superintendent Rupert. Additions to the original structure were made in 1952 and again in 1973. The last project added an All-Purpose Room and serving kitchen. Also, alterations were made to the first floor to create and administrative and health suite and a library .

Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, the Rupert building remains alive with the sights and sounds of busy students and teachers carrying on in the tradition of Professor Rupert himself.
